Birmingham City University’s Art, Design, and Media workshops play a key role in facilitating student success across our faculty. The Parkside Create & Make Technical team are looking for an experienced Ceramics and Plaster Technician to nurture and developing the skills and passion students have for this subject.  

The Ceramics facilities have developed a reputation for success, with students gaining skills and knowledge that are very relevant to the workplace. They get to experience the reality of making high quality items for sale at events each year. Our students work sits comfortably alongside the classic designs that sell from retail outlets, they regularly achieve recognition and awards at New Designers. The successful candidate would be someone able to guide and refine the skills needed to further this success.

The role is focused on supporting students from a range of courses, such as Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture and Product and Furniture Design of which there will be a focus on producing high quality outcomes.

As a Senior Technician, the successful candidate will be comfortable working within a team as well as on their own initiative. They will be expected to carry out all tasks associated with the running of a facility of this kind, this will involve ordering stock, booking appointments, training students, maintaining records, organizing tasks, and ensuring Health and Safety is maintained and put into practice at all times.

The candidate should be qualified to degree level in a relevant subject (or equivalent level combination of qualifications, skills and experience) and be able to demonstrate significant practical experience of ceramics and the use of plaster for mould and model making within an Architectural and Product Design context.

  • Running and organizing educational workshops or similar.
  • Delivering demonstrations and sharing skills.
  • IT and communications skills.
  • Slip Casting.
  • Slab and coil construction.
  • Hand and pinch forming.
  • Extruded forms.
  • Tile and Brick making.
  • Plaster turning. 
  • Plaster mould making.
  • Plaster hollow form making including flick coating.
  • Glazing.
  • Firing.
  • Finishing and fettling.


  • Wheel Throwing. 
  • First Aider training.
  • Health and Safety training or qualification. 
  • CAD Software skills.
  • Ceramics 3D Printing experience.
